Description
The triceps brachii is a large muscle located in the posterior compartment of the upper arm. It is made up of three heads: the long head, the lateral head, and the medial head. The long head originates from the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula, and the lateral and medial heads originate from the posterior humerus. The three heads converge and insert on the olecranon process of the ulna.
The lateral head of the triceps is positioned on the outside of the back of the arm, while the long head is on the inside. Both lie superficial to the medial head, and their proximal attachments lie deep to the posterior deltoid.
The long head originates just below the shoulder socket on the scapula. The lateral head originates from the proximal posterior humerus, with the medial head arising more distally but having a broader attachment on the lower two-thirds of the arm.
The primary function of the triceps brachii is to extend the elbow joint. This allows the arm to straighten, as well as to extend the hand backwards. The triceps brachii also helps to stabilize the shoulder joint during movements of the arm.
In terms of sports, the triceps brachii muscle is commonly used in activities that involve pushing or pressing movements.
It is not necessary to use the triceps brachii muscle daily, as it will naturally be engaged during activities that involve movement of the elbow and shoulder joints. However, incorporating specific exercises that target the triceps brachii can help to improve muscle strength and function.
