Description
The brachioradialis muscle is a muscle located in the upper arm and forearm. It is a long, slender muscle that extends from the upper arm to the hand. The brachioradialis muscle is responsible for flexing the elbow joint and supinating the forearm. Flexion of the elbow joint means that the brachioradialis helps to bend the arm at the elbow, bringing the hand closer to the shoulder. Supination of the forearm means that the brachioradialis helps to rotate the forearm so that the palm faces upwards. These movements are important for activities such as lifting objects or turning a doorknob.
The brachioradialis muscle originates from the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus bone, and inserts onto the styloid process of the radius bone. It is located on the lateral (outer) aspect of the upper arm and forearm, and is surrounded by the extensor carpi radialis longus and extensor carpi radialis brevis muscles.
One example of how the brachioradialis muscle is used is when you lift a heavy object off the ground. To do this, you need to flex your elbow joint and supinate your forearm, which is facilitated by the brachioradialis muscle working together with the biceps brachii and brachialis muscles. This movement allows you to grip the object securely and lift it with the necessary force.
Some examples of usage:
- pick up box
- pick up child
- swinging weight
