Description
The extensor indicis muscle is a small, flat muscle located in the posterior compartment of the forearm. It extends from the posterior aspect of the ulna and the interosseous membrane to the extensor expansion on the dorsal aspect of the hand. This muscle is innervated by the deep fibular nerve.
The main function of the extensor indicis muscle is to extend the index finger and assist in the extension of the wrist. It also helps to maintain the position of the hand in space and provides stability to the wrist joint.
The extensor indicis muscle is commonly used in activities that require gripping and fine motor control, such as holding a pencil or using a computer mouse. It is also used in activities that require extending the index finger and wrist, such as playing the piano or typing on a keyboard.
