Description
The extensor digiti minimi is a small muscle located in the posterior compartment of the forearm. It is a muscle that extends the fifth digit, or pinky finger, at the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints.
The muscle originates from the posterior surface of the ulna, just above the insertion of the extensor carpi ulnaris muscle. It passes posteriorly and laterally, passing through a fibro-osseous tunnel known as the sixth extensor compartment, before inserting onto the extensor expansion of the fifth digit.
In daily use, the extensor digiti minimi muscle is active when making a fist or when spreading the fingers apart. In sports, it can be used when gripping a ball or racket, or when throwing or catching a ball. It is also used when playing musical instruments that require delicate finger movements, such as a guitar or piano.
