Description
The transversus abdominis muscle is a deep muscle located in the abdomen. It originates from the inner surfaces of the lower six ribs, the lumbar fascia, the iliac crest, and the inguinal ligament, and inserts on the linea alba and the pubic crest. The primary function of the transversus abdominis is to assist in the compression of the abdominal contents, as well as the stabilization of the pelvis and spine.
In terms of sports, the transversus abdominis muscle is commonly used in activities that involve trunk rotation, but it can also be argued that it is used in all aspects of life.
It is not necessary to use the transversus abdominis muscle daily, as it will naturally be engaged during activities that involve movement of the trunk and pelvis. However, incorporating specific exercises that target the transversus abdominis can help to improve muscle strength and function.
