Description
The piriformis is a small, triangular muscle located in the buttock. It originates on the anterior surface of the sacrum and inserts on the greater trochanter of the femur.
The main function of the piriformis is to laterally rotate the thigh at the hip joint. It also helps to abduct the thigh when the hip is flexed. It works together with the other muscles of the hip to control and coordinate movement of the leg.
