Description
The levator ani is a group of muscles located in the pelvis. It is made up of the pubococcygeus, the iliococcygeus, and the puborectalis muscles. These muscles form the pelvic floor and support the organs in the pelvis, including the bladder and the rectum.

The levator ani muscles originate at the pubic bone and the tendinous arch of the pelvic fascia, and insert at the coccyx (tailbone) and the anococcygeal raphe (a band of tissue that runs along the back of the anus). The main function of the levator ani muscles is to support the pelvic organs and maintain continence (the ability to control the release of urine and feces). In addition, they play a role in sexual function, as they contract during orgasm.

any exercise that involves contracting and releasing these muscles in the pelvic floor will strengthen them.
