Description
The deep transverse perineal muscle is a muscle located in the pelvis. It is a paired muscle that is found in both males and females. The deep transverse perineal muscle is part of the pelvic floor muscles, which support the pelvic organs and assist with urinary and fecal continence.
The deep transverse perineal muscle originates from the ischial and inferior pubic rami, and inserts onto the central tendinous perineal body. In males, the deep transverse perineal muscle surrounds the prostate gland and the urethra. In females, the deep transverse perineal muscle surrounds the vagina and the urethra.
One example of how the deep transverse perineal muscle is used is during defecation. Contraction of the pelvic floor muscles, including the deep transverse perineal muscle, helps to relax the anus and facilitate the passage of feces. This helps to maintain bowel control and prevent accidental leakage.
